Block Blast Strategy: Plan Space Before You Clear Lines

Board space is your real resource

Occupied cells are not all equally harmful. A compact cluster can leave broad lanes around it, while a smaller but scattered pattern can break the board into unusable pockets. Prefer placements that preserve connected, versatile empty regions.

Think in line-clearing tradeoffs

Ask two questions before chasing a clear: what space will the clear create, and what placement options will it remove? A clear is especially useful when it opens a central lane or joins two empty regions. It is less attractive when it creates a sealed corner or a one-cell corridor.

Make room for large pieces early

Large pieces often have fewer legal placements than small pieces. Scan for a home for the largest current shape before filling easy gaps. If no good home exists, use a smaller piece to open one rather than spending the only flexible area on a low-value placement.

Plan the whole set of three

Try candidate orders, not just candidate locations. The best order may place an awkward shape first, clear a line with the second, and use the newly opened space for the third. When two placements look similar, choose the one that leaves more ways to finish the set.

Common losing patterns

• Building a tall wall that traps empty cells behind it.
• Leaving one-cell holes that no current or likely piece can fill.
• Using the center for a small piece when a larger piece needs it.
• Clearing a line while splitting the remaining space into narrow islands.

Example: a safe versus fragile clear

Imagine a row can be completed from either side. The left placement clears the row but leaves a two-cell pocket under a wall. The right placement also clears the row and keeps a three-by-three area connected. The second move is usually the stronger strategic choice because it preserves more future placements, even though both moves clear the same line.
